Who is eligible to join Lithium Federal Credit Union

Lithium FCU is a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative. Membership is limited to persons who meet our eligibility requirements.
To join, simply stop by our office in Bessemer City & open a share account with a minimum deposit of $20. Please bring state or federal identification with you upon account opening.

Employees or retirees drawing income from many different Select Employee Groups (SEG's) are eligible for membership. These Employee Groups include:

Immediate family of our members may also become part of our credit union. Immediate family is defined as spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent or grandchild. Immediate family member also includes stepparents, stepchildren, and adoptive relationships.

Individuals sharing a single economic unit with a current Lithium FCU member are also eligible for membership. A single economic unit is defined as persons living in the same residence maintaining a single economic unit, contributing economic resources in support of the household.

As of July 13, 2022, persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in and business and other legal entities located within the following prescribed underserved community consisting of nine census tracts in Gaston and Cleveland Counties, North Carolina meeting the underserved “investment area” definition of Section 109(c)(2) of the Federal Credit Union Act may also join and become members of the Credit Union. About Us

The organizational meeting of LCA Federal Credit Union was held on December 17, 1956. Thirty eight potential members attended along with the nine members that incorporated the credit union idea. Officers were elected and guidelines were established. The first Directors meeting was held immediately after the organizational meeting. The maximum amount for unsecured loans was set at $25.00 and the maximum shares that can be held per individual was established at $500.00. Membership was offered to employees of Lithium Corporation of America and the credit union was located on the plant site. As Lithium Corporation grew and acquired subsidiaries; the field of membership grew to include these groups.

The name of the credit union changed to Lithium Federal Credit Union on March 1, 2004. The name change was requested in an effort to offer membership to local companies in the area. Member expansion was achieved in 2004 with the addition of five outside SEG groups joining the Credit Union. The Credit Union continues to add SEG groups in insure growth. In July of 2022, the Credit Union was given permission to add a geographic area of membership due to the area being underserved by financial institutions.
